Youtoo is a new social TV network that adds a layer of social interaction and bridges content between the Web, television, and mobile devices. The social TV network is being launched by Mark Burnett, the famed producer behind popular shows such as Survivor, The Apprentice, and The Voice.
With all of these new developments in “Internet TV” technology, what makes Youtoo stand out in the crowd? Well, a couple of things:
- Youtoo is actually a cable television network and is available on Comcast and other cable service providers. (I checked to see if it was available in my zip code and it’s not around yet.)
- Youtoo allows you to record a 15-second “fame spot” that appears on television. You can record the video using your webcam and upload to the site. The company sparks these 15-second sound bites by using questions related to the content. This is your chance for 15 seconds of fame.
- Youtoo allows short “social shouts” which basically allow you to write a quick note and post across the network and other social networking sites (i.e., Facebook, Twitter) at the same time.
- Youtoo is also airing original web series, too. They are using content produced by Koldcast so far.
So, are these four things going to be enough to make Youtoo the next big thing? Well, I’m not too sure yet. In my opinion, the “fame spots” are the weakest component here. From a normal viewer’s perspective, “fame spots” are 15-second webcam snippets from people you don’t really know — not sure how interesting that will be in the end. I can see how these may offer some outrageous moments, but I anticipate a large volume of content that is less appealing than a :30 spot. On the other hand, the original web series may prove to be interesting as this is truly a bridge between web, social, and tv. The content is spread across all of the channels and offers viewers the ability to engage in real-time.
At the end of the day, I’m excited to see how things are progressing and the line is blurring between traditional television and the Web. I’m all for it and will continue to be on the lookout for the next big thing.
